What's inside?

/ THE COVER
A cover that doubles as secondary mixing wells. The wells take their shape from the thousands of lakes scattered across Finland.

/ THE WATER WELL
The NOMAD logo was a simple adaptation of a water drop and inspired by early paleolithic hand tools.

/ the pans
These custom, 3D-printed pans are designed with rounded interior edges for mixing pigments directly in the pans and magnetic bases that snap into place.

/ The mixing well
The primary mixing well is also organically inspired by the lakes of Finland and the archipelago.

/ the base
The optional base includes space for additional pigments, a sponge, and a water container.

Create your own color palette
You have the option to add to your palette, soft, easy-to-mix earth pigments—our signature red, yellow, turquoise, black, and white. These five tones can be combined into a wide range of earthy, muted, or vibrant colors and we include a step-by-step tutorial so you can learn exactly how to do it—just like I do in my large-scale works.
-
The Pigments
Hand-selected earth pigments from a quarry in France.
-
The Binder
Gum arabic is a natural binder that is exuded by Acacia trees in the Sahel region of Africa.
-
The Tools
Custom funnel and pestle for mixing your watercolor directly in the pans.
Meet the Makers
Nomad Palettes is a collaboration between an earth artist and an architect—two friends shaped by their love for nature, design, and travel. Every palette is designed in Finland, hand-assembled, and made to last. We believe art tools should be as beautiful and intentional as the art they help create.

David Popa
It started in the dirt. I’ve spent the last decade creating massive earth frescoes—ephemeral murals painted with water, charcoal, and earth, directly onto the land. From Icelandic beaches to frozen lakes, I’ve always carried the same tools: raw pigments, a brush, and a notebook. But I never had a palette that felt right. The plastic ones were ugly. The tin ones clunky. None of them matched the beauty of the work—or the ritual behind it. Nomad Palettes was born from that need: A palette that’s compact, beautiful, sustainable, and worthy of your creative journey.

Ryan Muir
I'm a licensed architect and one of the co-creators of Nomad Palettes. My architectural philosophy has always been rooted in thoughtful design—balancing form, function, and sustainability—so when David approached me with the idea for a travel watercolor palette that could live up to those same ideals, I was immediately intrigued. What started as a conversation between friends quickly became a design challenge I was excited to take on. With a shared love for good design, we developed a palette that reflects the same care and intentionality I bring to my architectural work. Every detail, from the use of birch wood to the modular system, was designed to feel natural, efficient, and inspiring for artists on the move.
